The Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse - Investigating the Politics of Knowledge and Meaning-making. (Paperback):... The Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse - Investigating the Politics of Knowledge and Meaning-making. (Paperback)
Reiner Keller, Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Wolf Schunemann
R1,303 Discovery Miles 13 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD) has reoriented research into social forms, structuration and processes of meaning construction and reality formation; doing so by linking social constructivist and pragmatist approaches with post-structuralist thinking in order to study discourses and create epistemological space for analysing processes of world-making in culturally diverse environments. SKAD is anchored in interpretive traditions of inquiry and allows for broadening - and possibly overcoming - of the epistemological biases and restrictions still common in theories and approaches of Western- and Northern-centric social sciences. An innovative volume, this book is exactly attentive to these empirically based, globally diverse further developments of approach, with a clear focus on the methodology and its implementation. Thus, The Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse presents itself as a research program and locates the approach within the context of interpretive social sciences, followed by eleven chapters on different cases from around the world that highlight certain theoretical questions and methodological challenges. Presenting outstanding applications of the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse across a wide variety of substantive projects and regional contexts, this text will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers interested in fields such as Discourse Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies and Qualitative Methodology and Methods.

Ocean Governance - Knowledge Systems, Policy Foundations and Thematic Analyses (Paperback, 1st ed. 2023): Stefan Partelow,... Ocean Governance - Knowledge Systems, Policy Foundations and Thematic Analyses (Paperback, 1st ed. 2023)
Stefan Partelow, Maria Hadjimichael, Anna-Katharina Hornidge
R1,026 Discovery Miles 10 260 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This Open Access book on Ocean Governance examines sustainability challenges facing our oceans today. The book is organized into three sections: knowledge systems, policy foundations and thematic analyses. The knowledge produced in the book was catalyzed by the scientific outcomes within the European-funded Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) network "Ocean Governance for Sustainability - Challenges, Options and the Role of Science". This network brings together scientists, policy-makers and civil society representatives from 28 nation states to cooperate on ocean governance research. This book offers a compilation of new research material including focused case studies, broad policy syntheses and reflective chapters on the history and current status of knowledge production systems on ocean governance. New research material is presented, although some chapters draw on secondary sources. The book starts with synthetic review chapters from the editors, outlining past and present knowledge systems, addressing how and why ocean governance for sustainability is where it currently stands with critical reflections on existing narratives, path dependencies and colonialist histories. This is followed by chapters addressing, synthesizing and analyzing different legal and policy frameworks for ocean governance both regionally and internationally. At the core of the book are the thematic analyses, which provide focused case studies with detailed contextual information in support of different ocean governance challenges and sustainability pathways around the world. The book concludes with a chapter explicitly targeting students, researchers and policy-makers with key take-away messages compiled by the editors.

Area Studies at the Crossroads - Knowledge Production after the Mobility Turn (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Area Studies at the Crossroads - Knowledge Production after the Mobility Turn (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Katja Mielke, Anna-Katharina Hornidge
R5,260 Discovery Miles 52 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this pioneering volume, leading scholars from a diversity of backgrounds in the humanities, social sciences, and different area studies argue for a more differentiated and self-reflected role of area-based science in global knowledge production. Considering that the mobility of people, goods, and ideas make the world more complex and geographically fixed categories increasingly obsolete, the authors call for a reflection of this new dynamism in research, teaching, and theorizing. The book thus moves beyond the constructed divide between area studies and systematic disciplines and instead proposes methodological and conceptual ways for encouraging the integration of marginalized and often overseen epistemologies. Essays on the ontological, theoretical, and pedagogical dimension of area studies highlight how people's everyday practices of mobility challenge scholars, students, and practitioners of inter- and transdisciplinary area studies to transcend the cognitive boundaries that scholarly minds currently operate in.

R1,050 Discovery Miles 10 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Environmental Uncertainty and Local Knowledge - Southeast Asia as a Laboratory of Global Ecological Change (Paperback):... Environmental Uncertainty and Local Knowledge - Southeast Asia as a Laboratory of Global Ecological Change (Paperback)
Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Christoph Antweiler
R988 R725 Discovery Miles 7 250 Save R263 (27%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Southeast Asia is a laboratory showing current worldwide ecological issues. Environmental change, natural resource exploitation as well as global climate change increasingly threaten people's livelihoods. Environmentally-based uncertainties foster a high level of knowledge uncertainty. This poses a constantly growing threat to agricultural production. Vulnerable communities with a low degree of resilience are most severely affected. But local communities have abilities to innovate and develop locally embedded coping strategies. The contributors of this volume are most interested in environmental change that fosters knowledge uncertainties. Regions discussed include the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, Moluccas, Central Kalimantan, West Sumatra and South Sulawesi in Indonesia and Tangail Region in Bangladesh.
